Cats are nocturnal or Catch the Ribbon

Everyone knows cats are nocturnal. I love my cats but I am against the idea of waking me up in the middle of the night because both of them need to play. I really love to sleep. So we got Chica & Pumuckl used to our circadian rhythm. They sleep when we are sleeping and they wake us up just 10 minutes before the alarm is ringing.

In order to not wake us up in night because Chica and Pumuckl cannot sleep, I have created an all evening ritual which is Catch the Ribbon. When I am preparing for bed I always take their beloved brown ribbon with me. Pumuckl knows this already. He loves to play with the ribbon. So whenever I am going to the bedroom in night he is already jumping towards and is waiting on the bed until I arrive.

Playing Catch the Ribbon is extra fun in the bed. There are blankets and pillows, you can build mountains to climb on with your legs. All in all: It's just fun.

Cat playing Catch the RibbonUsually Chica is not the type of playful cat. She likes more to sit a bit away from the scene and watch Pumuckl and me playing. But not with Catch the Ribbon! Our little diva, the responsible Mommy, who is always serious, becomes a child when seeing the ribbon. She jumps around crazily to catch the ribbon, jumps high, jumps far. She even hit me with her claw yesterday which is very unusual for her as she is always taking care to not hurt anybody.

Chica is a very smart cat. I don't want to say Pumuckl is stupid, but definitely Chica is smarter. She is calculating the inrun. She is always waiting for the right moment to jump to not use too much energy. Pumuckl on the other side jumps wherever the ribbon goes, without thinking, without calculation.

Funny Cat playing with RibbonWhen Chica is playing with us Pumuckl knows he has no chance to win. He then is the one sitting beside and watching. But since Chica joined our games he learned a lot already. He knows now how to catch the ribbon and how to hold it.

Well, after playing for half an hour I feel like I was spending 2 hours in gym. My arm gets really heavy from always throwing the ribbon. But the best side effect is: Chica & Pumuckl got tired. And they sleep all night through. And just wake us up 10 minutes before the alarm is ringing :)

Btw, tomorrow we are getting visitors from Germany. Chica's and Pumuckl's grandparents will spend one week with us. We are all very excited already. Chica and Pumuckl have never met their grandfather before.

We've adapted to Mom's rythym. So much so, that when she gets out of rythym we have to remind her it's time to go to bed, or time to get up, Mom!

That's great! It's really necessary to remind the humans sometimes.

But I am happy that Chica & Pumuckl know when it is a day off and the alarm will not ring, so they won't wake us up. :)

It looks like you are having fun with that ribbon!

Actually, we cats aren't nocturnal. We're crepuscular, which means we're more active at dusk and dawn. :)

That is very wise to tire them so you can sleep through the night...and it's fun too.

We've actually brought the Humans into line with our rythyms; we rule the roost so to speak, meow.
We'll have to suggest the Zoolatry Human get a ribbon out of her sewing box; right now it is yarn which gets stuck in our teeth! Check your mailbox, from us.

Oh you are having fun. We are all very good girls and go to bed before our mummies and don't get up until they they do. Then we have cuddles and kisses :O)

Ribbons are fun to play with. We go to bed with the Beans, but if we wake up in the night to eat, we wake them up too in case they hungry too.

Wow, what fabulous playtime -- and that's good timing, too, right before bed! That ribbon looks like it's so much fun.

We are on the beans schedule for the most part. Goldie goes to bed with the wee ones so he thinks it is time to get up at 4am.

That ribbon looks like fun!
