Cats on Tour through Egypt: The River Nile

... Chica is teaching Pumuckl Egyptian history

Pumuckl, today I gonna show you the River Nile, the main artery of Egypt. I hope you are excited as I am. We will also take a ride on a felucca!

Where is the River Nile?

The Nile is the longest river in the world, stretching north for approximately 4,000 miles from East Africa to the Mediterranean. Studies have shown that the River gradually changed its location and size over millions of years.

The Nile flows from the mountains in the south to the Mediterranean in the north. The Nile is the longest river in Africa and also considered as the longest river of the world. Just 22% of the Nile are located in Egypt.

Why did the Ancient Egyptians live near the River Nile?

Most Egyptians lived near the Nile as it provided water and excellent soil for growing food. The ancient Egyptians began with small settlements around the Nile River and were able to make permanent settlements only because of the presence of the Nile. As the Egyptian civilization grew, it became even more dependent on the Nile and its’ role in their economy. Finally, because of the Ancient Egyptian dependence on the Nile River, it became a centerpiece of their religious practices and their belief in the afterlife. It was by the banks that one of the oldest civilizations in the world began.

Why so many tourists coming to Egypt also go on a Nile Cruise?

In order to see the country and its people as well as many of Egypt's most attracting and famous sights many travelers book a Nile Cruise. A felucca is often the water vehicle of choice. So don't be scared Pumuckl, you don't have to swim., I know you hate the water. This would also be dangerous because the water of the Nile is not very healthy!

When cruising the Nile, we will pass by the ancient and significant sites of Karnak itself, Luxor, on the other side of the river from Karnak, Dendera, with its grand temple to the goddess Hathor, Abydos, with its marvelous temple built by Seti I as well as being the site of Earlier Dynastic tombs, Esna, with its temple to the potter and creator-god Khnum, lord of the region who was credited as having the power over the river and its richness, Edfu, with its temple to Horus, Kom Ombo, with its double temple to Sobek and a form of Horus called Haroeris, and Aswan itself, with its mighty modern dam.

Pumuckl: Mommy, from where you always know these interesting things?

Chica: Pumuckl, I am reading a lot, that's why I am always so tired. The info about the Nile I got from Touregypt, they have great recourses and from Woodlands Junior School.

Terrific photos! :) Our mom and dad really enjoyed their cruise down the Nile, except for the day they had to wait at the locks to go through. Sadly, their photos aren't as clear as yours, because there was a LOT of haze while they were cruising.
