Today all Egyptians are celebrating the Sham El-Nassim, the Spring Feast.
The Sham El-Nassim, literally meaning ‘sniffing the breeze’, marks the beginning of the spring and has been celebrated already 4500 years ago by the Ancient Egyptians and is one of the oldest festivals still celebrated today. The feast was originally developed from the Pharaonic celebration of the harvest season, which was known as Shamo.
As their ancenstors offered salted fish, lettuce and onions Gods to ensure a successful harvest season, today the Egyptians enjoy this as traditional Sham El-Nassim food. Each food has a symbolic significance. Lettuce and “Malana” a leafy green plant similar to lettuce, symbolize the hope that the beginning of spring brings. Salted fish called “feseekh” and “ringa” were believed to promote fertility and welfare, and are eaten with pickled onions.
Children also color eggs, painting them in different designs. This practice is thought to have been started by the Pharaohs; the egg symbolizes the renewal of life. Dyed eggs from pharaonic times are a direct predecessor of our Easter eggs today. So you see, coloring eggs is not an invention of the Easter Bunny but of the Pharaohs!
In Sham El-Nassim modern Egyptians are using the day off to spend a family day in the parks or even to go on a short-term holiday to any of the tourist destinations in Egypt.
Pumuckl is feeling well so far. He is already running around almost like normal. We are so thankful. He was even sleeping with us in our bed! The only negative point are the fights between him and Chica... again. We have separated them and unfortunately Chica is now sitting alone in the kitchen, door closed. I hope she understands.

Hi Chica and Pumuckl, thank you so much for keeping Orange Boy in your thoughts. We are so worried. It's 3:10 in the morning right now and our regular vet doesn't open until 8:30. Will these hours ever pass?
I am so glad to hear that Pumuckl is feeling better. Chica will come around soon!
What is that treat you are eating, Pumuckl? Looks very interesting.

@Moki: Lovely you stay up all night to care about Orange Boy. I also stayed awake until 4 am last night because I wanted to check how Pumuckl is going.
Hope Orange Boy will be better soon, with such a great nurse!
@goldenshade: These are German treats. Besides Felix the only one Chica eats (and of course also Pumuckl loves it!)
It's like fine 'sausages' in different tastes. The one they like most comes with salmon.
Hi there Pumuckl, you're looking pretty healthy after your surgery, although we understand if you feel a bit sick. We're glad that you're getting lots of treats to help you recover. You can run around with Chica when you feel all better. Your treats sound yummy!

@ A Simple Life: Great to hear Lokii is better! Wish you all teh best.
@ -d ma: Actually Pumuckl is the only one of our family who finds this yogurt tasty! It's very sour and ... brrr. :)
@ Babs (Beetle): Well, this might take some days! :)
Pumuckl is really okay, he is running around and jumping on the sofa to sleep next to me. Really cute :) It just seems to hurt a bit when he is jumping down from anything high, but well, that's normal just 1 day after.
When we had our surgery, Mom was worried we felt too good, too fast because the Vet wanted us to be inactive. We were not cooperating. We hope Chica will come around as soon as the Vet smell wears off.
Pumuckl, you should start to feel better soon. You got to have some tasty yogurt, yummmm. That is one of our favorite treats too. You have a great day!

We hope you are feeling better today. There is normally just a small amount of down time and then you'll be back to your normal self in no time. Your treats look very yummy....

@ Gandalf & Grayson: Hm, our vet didn't mention this. But as Chica and Pumuckl don't like each otehr at the moment there is anyway no running around crazily. :-)
@ Team Tabby: Another fellow yogurt lover! Great!
@ DEBRA: Well, for Chica it took about 2 months to recover fully after neutering. That's why we have been so worried and are so, so happy now when seeing Pumuckl going well already 1 day after!
I am so glad that Pumuckl is feeling better. They will both be back to normal in no time.
Poor Pumuckl . . . feel better soon! I'm purring for you. And for Chica.
