Why Pumuckl is called like a mancat

Pumuckl is not a mancat! He is a female ginger, exactly like his Mommy. But why we say "he" when we actually talk about her?

Well, after we received several comments of our readers assuming Pumuckl is a mancat, my boyfriend and I discussed yesterday how we got the idea to call Pumuckl a guy. The answer is: We don't remember. It was like that from beginning.

When Pumuckl was born and I saw him for the first time I directly got the idea the name Pumuckl would fit very well with him. He had red hair like his Mama, his eyes have been huge, his nose as well and the nose was red. Plus, he was very tiny.

Pumuckl - Original and CatPumuckl - Original and Copy

The original Pumuckl is a TV figure from Germany. There are several movies about his adventures. Pumuckl is a kobold which can just been seen by several people (and by kids I guess). He is living with Meister Eder in his workshop and he has his own bed. And he lis always doing the craziest things. When I was a kid I loved Pumuckl. Actually I still do.

The original Pumuckl is a guy. So it was just natural we also called our Pumuckl "he". Also it made things easier. When we talk about Chica, we say "she", when talking about Pumuckl, it's "he".

At his birth when giving Pumuckl his name we couldn't know how his character was. But with every day we feel this name fits so well in him.

Anyway we never have the feeling that Pumuckl is a kitty girl. He is not acting like a girl. His Mommy is walking like a lady, he is just freaking around. Chica is silent and quiet, Pumuckl on the other hand is destroying things (like the toilet paper :) and running around crazily all time. Chica is living a peaceful life, Pumuckl can be very aggressive sometimes. Pumuckl has a cheeky face, his character all in all is cheeky.

Cheeky Cat Pumuckl
Actually for others this "he, Pumuckl" can cause some problems. I just remember our first meeting with the vet. I always said "This is Pumuckl, he is ..." so the vet assumed it is a mancat. Until he saw him. During talking with the vet I always have to control myself to say "she" because he got totally confused. Poor vet :)

Well, you can say, we are crazy, or stupid, or whatever. We cannot change it anymore. We got used to it. I could never talk about Pumuckl saying "she". It's just the way it is.

My Daddy always calls Rudy a "she" and he is a he, so we understand!

We have heard of that before. That is funny, I can't even think of Pumuckl as a girl.

Oh, that is very confusing! We are both males, and it's easy to tell that we are.

It does not matter whether he or she... as long as he or she is not referred to as "THE" cat. That sounds like he or she is doing bad things, mmm.

The same with me, I can't think of Pumuckl as a nice kitty...

That's funny. Mike's a girl with a boy's name, and she's named after a TV character who was a girls with a boys name. But, she's pretty girly. I have a friend who calls all his cats "him" whether they're boys or girls.

Mommy used to have a mancat named Chloe, because he was so floofy when he was a kitten that no one could tell he was a mancat until he got older. After that, she changed it to "Cloey Boy," because by then that was definitely his name, but she didn't want to offend his mancatly pride.

I think that's very cute and it does help differentiate between the two females.

I have 3 females and when we say "her" or "she" it does get very confusing.

Oh, I did not know that Pumuckl was a girl. I hope she/he doesn't have any gender identity issues.

When Mom got Grayson, who was abandoned at the Vets's doorstep, they told Mom it was a girl. Mom chose to name Gracie, thinking it was a girl. Well, 2 days later, Mom discovered it was a male. So the name Gracie became Grayson.

After neutering, we're not sure it's all that important anyhow.

I'm sure Pumuckl doesn't care what you call him/her, just as long as it's not late for dinner!

Chairman Mao's fambly called Brainball a "she" for years and even had the vet convinced until... closer inspection was called for.

I didn't realize until today that you're in Egypt! Do beans there still treat cats with proper reverence? Perhaps I should move there to receive proper respect.

Good evening! (Haha, always wanted to start with something like that!)

Thanks for all your comments. It's great to see we are not the only insane persons calling a she a he and Pumuckl is not the only insane cat acting like the other gender.

@Kellie The Orange Cat: He has. Sometimes we are thinking about a surgery to give him his mankind. LOL

@Gandalf & Grayson: Grayson is a wonderful name. Actually better than Gracie in my opinion :)

@Bonnie Underfoot: Well, not really. Cats have a hard life here. Especially the hundreds of strays in our streets which are hit by kids. But more about this soon.

I suppose it doesn't matter that you are a girlie with a manly name. We think you're lovely whatever.

Ah, makes it easier to understand which cat is being talked about. Their are two females and one male her and dad confused mom all the time by saying "what is she doing now?" Mom always says "who" and dad sez "the cat" and mom sez "which cat" and then dad will say the name and mom sez "why didn't you just say xxxxx in the first place"! We need to have a he, she and an it!

Pumuckl is a gorgeous ginger!

MoMo said...

that's funny - I have only just met your cats recently and I have always thought of Pumuckl as a 'he'. I will have the fact that 'he' is actually a girl cat but will continue to think of her as a 'him'.

@Babs (Beetle): Wow, 3 cards! You are so lovely! Thank you so much! So let's see how fast is the worldwide postcard delivery :)

@Zippy, Sadie and Speedy: Haha :) We are having the same problems when we have visitors. They usually don't use our system and when talking about Pumuckl they say "she". we don't get the point then which is really confusing.

@MoMo: Exactly, continue thinking about him as a guy. He will be happy about that :) I just wanted to tell you all the story behind =)
